Can you help us care for injured wild raptors or our parrots? We are a non-profit run by a small team of staff and volunteers. We greatly appreciate any and all donations. Below is a “Donate” button, where your funds go towards the rehabilitation of injured birds. If you would like to support our parrot team, you can donate directly or sponsor one of our lovely rescued parrots and learn more about them.
Since we are a non-profit, our only funding is through donations and grants. We rely on support from the general public to support our operations.
All of our parrots are rescues from the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs that shut down in 2016. For more information, please click the link below.
The care cost for one parrot is approximately $30 per week, not including staff or volunteer time. Your generous sponsorship donation will be put directly towards food, enrichment and vet care for these amazing birds.
In 2016, the RRS decided to adopt 13 parrots from Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary. These parrots were originally from the World Parrot Refuge, which closed in 2016, and unfortunately came with very little background or information on their lives prior to adoption.
We decided to adopt parrots that required more medical attention than the other parrots that needed homes, as we are able to provide comprehensive medical care. Due to the medical attention needed by these birds, some are considered palliative care. Despite this, we hope to provide the best quality of life and care for these lovely characters for the rest of their lives.
Early in 2020, we finished renovating a large barn for the parrots to live in. Each bird has their own aviary and they have common areas and flight areas to explore and engage in during the day. We hope to expand this area to have two larger flying areas for them in the near future, and we also hope to finish renovating the area to open parts of their space to visitors by 2022.
Jupiter is a Moluccan Cockatoo. She is a joyful bird and absolutely loves people. Attention is her favourite thing and she would spend all day with you playing, talking and dancing. She loves to play catch, whistle and zoom around all over the place.
Jupiter is a bird that has developed a destructive feather plucking behaviour due to her traumatic past (although most of her past is unknown to us). Parrots pluck their own feathers when they are bored, stressed, or depressed. Even after they get adopted into a great home, the habit can be so ingrained that it may persist for years or even the rest of their lives. Since she has done it for many, many years, she has ruined the feather follicles so she will unfortunately never grow all her feathers back. Despite this plucking behaviour, she is a happy girl and enjoys spending her days destroying things or watching us putter about the building.
We also appreciate donations of items on our wish list. These items help us keep our hospital and parrot refuge clean and safe. If you are able to contribute anything on our wish list, we greatly appreciate your assistance. If you are interested in helping to provide toys and enrichment for our parrots, please follow the guidelines provided here: Parrot Enrichment Activity Book and CONTACT US to arrange drop-off. We appreciate all the extra toys, as our parrots destroy them quickly!
